Kenny Vázquez (Ken-Y) was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. He first started his career alongside José Nieves (R.K.M), with whom he formed the Grammy Award-nominated reggaeton duo RKM & Ken-Y.
The duo started their music career in high school. R.K.M (formerly known as "Rakim" but changed to avoid confusion with the established hip-hop artist Rakim) was inspired by the explosion of reggaeton music in the 1990s. He encouraged Ken-Y to join him to form a duo; they performed at 16th birthday parties and public events. This success attracted Raphy Pina, the reggaeton mogul, who signed the duo to his label Pina Records.
In 2013, Ken-Y and RKM split ways so they could both follow their solo careers. Ken-Y then went on to release his first solo album, The King of Romance, in 2016. The record topped the Latin Rhythm Albums Billboard chart, selling 1,000 copies of the digital-only release in one week.
