It was one of the most anticipated boxing fights of the year, two huge names in Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez were coming together for a fight to remember - Cotto vs Martinez. Anticipation was high, with the punters at Madison Square Garden in New York expecting big things.
It certainly turned out to be one of the most memorable fights in recent memory. For Miguel Cotto it was probably the best moment of his career.
The fight was expected to be an extremely close call, with both Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez being at the top of their game, and extremely fantastic boxers.
Cotto beat Martinez in just ten minutes, and in fact at one point it looked like Martinez might not even make it out of the first round. Fortunately for the paying audience he managed to get up, and steadied himself for the next few rounds managing to survive.
However there was only ever going to be one winner in Cotto vs Martinez, and after 9 rounds, and into the 10th round, with Miguel Cotto being firmly in the lead, the fight was stopped at the request of Sergio Martinez's trainer.
Cotto was always ahead with impressive stats throughout the match. He landed 212 of 395 punches, which is 54%. This is in contrast to Martinez who only landed 100 of 322 punches.
This victory allowed Cotto to gain the WBC middleweight championship. He hasn't announced what his next move will be, although it can be expected that a fight to retain the championship will be coming in the near future.
