The most exciting time of the year for Mexican soccer fans has arrived once again. It is time for the start of the 2014 Apertura tournament of the Liga MX.
The Liga MX, for those that don't know, is the top flight of the Mexican soccer system. The league is split into two championships, one being the Apertura tournament, the other being the Clausura tournament.
The Aperture tournament runs from July 18 2014 to November 11 2014. There are eighteen teams that are contesting to win the title.
But there is a lot more to play for than just the title. The top eight teams in the league advance to the playoffs. These consist of a quarter final, semi final, and final to decide the champions of the league. The top two teams also qualify for the second stage of the Copa Libertadores, which is South Americas premier club football tournament. Some teams can't qualify due to their participation in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League. These teams are América, Cruz Azul, León and Pachuca.
Morelia have also qualified for the first stage of the Copa Libertadores due to their winning of the Supercopa MX.
As of the time of this article two games have been played by each team. Both Monterrey & América have won their opening two games.
It looks set to be an exciting season of soccer. Every team will be desperately trying to qualify for the playoffs (Liguilla) so that they can win the tournament, but many teams will be more concerned with getting into the top two so that they can qualify for continental football.
